In India, Sonia Gandhi is at the threshold of becoming only the second woman ever to lead the world's largest democracy. Gandhi is the daughter-in-law of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She is the widow of Rajiv Gandhi, also prime minister assassinated during a campaign stop in 1991. Sonia Gandhi would be the first Christian and the first foreign-born prime minister of India.
