Express Scripts Inc., among the nation's largest pharmacy benefit managers, said Wednesday its third-quarter earnings slid and blamed the decline on legal charges tied to shareholder and fraud lawsuits.

The suburban St. Louis company said Wednesday it earned $61.9 million, or 80 cents per share, for the three-month period ending Sept. 30. That compares with earnings of $64.5 million, or 81 cents per share, a year ago.

The latest figures include a 20-cent-per-share charge meant to bolster Express Scripts' reserves for legal costs, including for its defense of a fraud lawsuit filed by New York State and a string of shareholder lawsuits. The company also ...
