Greece formally complained to the United States on Thursday after reports that it formally recognized the Republic of Macedonia ahead of a crucial referendum in the Balkan country.

"I summoned the American ambassador and submitted a protest to the United States for its decision to recognize" the name of the republic, Foreign Minister Petros Moliviatis said after meeting Ambassador Thomas Miller. "I also pointed out the negative consequences of such a unilateral decision."

Miller left the meeting without making any comment and there was no immediate confirmation of the recognition in the United States.
