Travel back to the time of jazz legend Wes Montgomery this summer as the
Indiana State Museum highlights a rare artifact in music history.
Montgomery's guitar, one of only two still in existence, will be on display
in the museum's Indiana's Treasures exhibit in the Grand Lobby.
Born in Indianapolis in 1923, Wes Montgomery was originally named John
Leslie Montgomery. Unable to afford lessons, yet inspired by guitarist
Charlie Christian, Montgomery began to teach himself to play guitar.
Montgomery soon developed a unique style, which was characterized by an
appealing use of octaves and often described as "impossible."
