This is TALK OF THE NATION. I'm Neal Conan in Washington.
Somewhere in the misty past, Homo sapiens became the first and only animal to recognize its own mortality. The search for immortality started shortly thereafter. Close to 3,000 years ago, Chinese alchemists believed that liquified gold could prolong life for those willing to drink it. In the 1500s legend has it explorer Ponce de Leon went in search of the fountain of youth. He found Florida instead.
