More than 3,600 residents of St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, have signed a petition asking Congress to make the island its own U.S. territory separate from St. Thomas and St. John.

The petition will soon be given to the U.S. Congress for consideration, said Leola Christian, a 55-year-old hospital supervisor helping to collect signatures.

Supporters say seceding from the rest of the Virgin Islands would bring St. Croix, the poorest of the three main islands, more funds from the U.S. government.
