Greece on Tuesday said that Spanish authorities would release the veteran Greek captain of the sunken oil tanker Prestige as he awaits a possible trial on charges stemming from the November 2002 environmental catastrophe.

Apostolos Mangouras, 69, will be allowed to return to Greece after Spain agreed to relax the terms of his euro3 million (US$3.8 million) bail, which had barred him from leaving the country, the Merchant Marine Ministry said.
