The Dominican Republic may have a population of just under nine million, but it is larger, by baseball talent, than almost anywhere else on the planet. Vladimir Guerrero of the Anaheim Angels won the American League Most Valuable Player award Tuesday, easily beating the second-place finisher, Gary Sheffield of the Yankees. Four of the top five in the balloting were from the Dominican Republic. ''It's in our blood,'' said Guerrero, speaking through an interpreter on a conference call with reporters. ''We grow up with baseball. It's really enforced, growing up, on young kids.'' Guerrero is the fourth Dominican to win a league MVP award. ...
