In 1985, a coffeehouse opened in the Palermo Viejo section of Buenos Aires. It was the area's first gathering place for the artists who were joining the blue-collar, longtime residents in this green and leafy enclave west of the bustling city center. The bohemian cafe, called El Taller, or ''The Workshop,'' catered to newcomers who had been priced out of apartments in the neighboring districts of Belgrano and Barrio Norte or who just preferred one of the area's charming 1920s homes.
