Fed: National drowning fatalities 2003/04

Following are key figures from the Royal Life Saving Society Australia national drowning
report for the 12 months to June 30, 2004:

Children 0-5 years:

- 40 children drowned, making up 14 per cent of total drowning deaths

- 27 (68 per cent) were males

- 18 (45 per cent) drowned in swimming pools

- 19 (62 per cent) fell or wandered into water prior to drowning

Children 6-14 years:

- Eight children drowned, making up three per cent of total drowning deaths

- Four (50 per cent) were males

- Four (50 per cent) drowned in rivers
