Kosovo's new prime minister assumed office Monday despite repeated appeals from Serbia, which accuses him of war crimes, for the United Nations to prevent him coming to power.

Ramush Haradinaj, a former rebel commander, shook hands with outgoing Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi as he moved into the government offices.

U.N. war crimes investigators recently questioned him on his role during the province's 1998-1999 war between ethnic Albanian separatists and Serb authorities, but no charges have been brought. He denies any involvement in war crimes.
