Australia will create a new maritime security zone extending 1,000 nautical miles (1,150 statute miles, 1,850 kilometers) from its coast in a bid to protect shipping, ports and oil rigs from terrorist attack, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

Prime Minister John Howard will announce details of the plan later Wednesday, The Australian newspaper said.

The new so-called Australian Maritime Information Zone, which will extend 1,000 nautical miles, will demand that ships passing through provide details of their journey and their cargo, it said.
