Moscow reacted angrily Wednesday to criticism from top Moldovan officials of the persistent Russian military presence in the small ex-Soviet republic, saying their remarks are unfriendly and counterproductive.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted to statements by Moldova's envoy at a European security conference calling the presence of Russian troops in the separatist Trans-Dniester region an occupation.

"Such an interpretation of the real situation cannot but be considered in Moscow as anything other than absurd, irresponsible and clearly unfriendly," the ministry said in a statement.
