The United States applauded the Dominican Senate on Wednesday for voting to repeal an import tax on corn syrup that jeopardized a free-trade pact between the two countries.

The Dominican Senate voted 29-0 to repeal the tax Tuesday, just three months after Congress voted it into law. The House of Deputies must still vote on whether to eliminate it.

"We are pleased to see them take this first step. We look forward to the next step," said Richard Mills, a spokesman for U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick.
