For many sisters, losing their hair because they want to look cute like
their White and Asian counterparts is a high price to pay. There is
increasing evidence that too-tight braids, ponytails, extensions, chemical
relaxers, multiple hair treatments and bonding glue are among the most
common reasons for hair loss with Black and African-American women.
The problem affects an estimated 22 million women in the United States,
often creating self-esteem issues and causing chronic cases of severe
depression.
"I wore my hair in braids for seven years, The hair at my temples and
around the edges started coming out four years ago," said Tameka Alissa
