Venezuelan authorities began inspecting eight farms in central Cojedes state on Wednesday to determine whether some lands may be turned over to poor farmers, a legal adviser to the governor said.

Alexis Ortiz, an adviser to Cojedes governor Jhonny Yanez, a said the inspections formed part of an agrarian reform effort led by President Hugo Chavez.

Chavez, a self-proclaimed "revolutionary," has pledged "war against the large estates" in Venezuela using a 2001 law that allows the expropriation of "idle" farmlands that are not put to adequate use.
