Detroit's own Debra McLaughlin believes that you can change the direction
in which your life is going. She knows that it calls for determination,
hard work, ambition, faith, people who believe in you and community
resources. Sometimes, a little dose of luck added to that mix helps as
well.

About eight years ago, McLaughlin's life was fairly out of control. The
mother of three became an alcoholic, had a seizure disorder, and was
legally blind. Despite all of that, she was still able to sew. Four years
later, she went into a rehabilitation program. When she emerged, the only
things she had were pictures of her children and a sewing machine.
