"My advice to young African-American actors is to get proficient in all
genres of theater, and to feel equally comfortable with August Wilson as
they are with Shakespeare. I think the big mistake many of us make is
limiting ourselves to just our genre of material. It's important to be able
to do our work but very important not to be limited in your perspective.
That's a stereotype and unfortunately it's expected in our industry. So
when we take the parameters and shackles off ourselves, then we have a
stronger argument for demanding that those shackles and invisible walls be
removed from all of us."
