Article: Five fresh ingredients = fine fare

CONCORD, N.H. - The five-ingredient fad mostly has yet to impress me.

In recent years publishers have produced a steady stream of inane books
that claim to help you pull together a 12-course meal with nothing but five
or fewer common ingredients.

My issue isn't with the supposed ease. Nothing turns me off more than a
recipe with 25 ingredients and 50 steps (and here's a tip to publishers -
numbering the steps makes it look even worse).

My gripe is that most of these recipes actually call for more than five
ingredients (perhaps the authors need those numbered). Even when they do
limit themselves to five items, they too often call for prepared items ...
