The recent death of H. David Dalquist, inventor of the Bundt cake pan, reminded many cooks of the beautiful, easy cakes that quietly fell out of fashion. WEEKEND EDITION essayist Bonny Wolf has fond memories of the days of the Bundt cake.

The Harvey Wallbanger cake was the first fancy dessert I learned to make. I was 16 and I was stunned by the spectacular cake that came out of the oven. It was perfectly shaped, evenly browned and consistently moist. That's what you get with a Bundt pan.
