Article: Spyware slows computer systems, creates pop-ups

(Kansas State Collegian) (U-WIRE) MANHATTAN, Kan. -- It can happen when it's least expected.

Spyware -- commonly mistaken for a virus -- invades a computer and causes it to run slowly, creates more ads pop up, resets the browser's homepage and tracks the Web sites a user visits.

INFECTION

There are several ways a computer can become infected with spyware, even if the owner is an average person who uses the computer for homework and the Internet, said Tim Ramsey, information technology security coordinator for Computing and Networking Services.

A person can get spyware just by visiting the wrong website, he said.
