Ethnic Georgians living in the breakaway region of South Ossetia freed a senior South Ossetian official who had been abducted along with at least 11 others in retaliation for the seizure of a Georgian police officer, a senior police official said Sunday. The fate of the other hostages was unknown.

Makhal Gassiyev, a deputy South Ossetian minister, was freed Saturday, hours after he was seized, said Alexander Sukhitashvili, head of the regional Shida Kartli police.
