Kosovo's prime minister, a former rebel leader in the province, will soon be charged with war crimes by a United Nations tribunal, a Serbian official said Saturday.

An indictment against Ramush Haradinaj is awaiting clearance by U.N. judges before it can become effective, said Jovan Simic, an adviser to Serbia's President Boris Tadic. Simic said he had "reliable information" the chief U.N. war crimes prosecutor had signed the document.

Officials at the U.N. court in The Hague, Netherlands, declined to comment.

Previously, the prosecutors have suggested they were working on new indictments related to the 1998-99 Kosovo war.
