(Montana Kaimin) (U-WIRE) MISSOULA, Mont. -- Despite the rising cost of academic journals, the University of Montana's Mansfield Library has greatly increased its access to journals in the last five years.

The cost of journals, sometimes called serials, grew 226 percent between 1986 and 2000, according to the Association of Research Libraries Web site. Meanwhile, libraries' actual number of subscriptions for serials declined by 7 percent during that same period, which has become known among librarians as the "serials crisis."
