SA: Endangered cockatoo survives bushfire

ADELAIDE, Feb 11 AAP - An endangered colony of cockatoo has survived the devastating
bushfire on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula last month despite initial fears it might
have been wiped out.

Environment Minister John Hill said with fewer than 35 yellow-tailed black cockatoos
left on the Eyre Peninsula there was concern for their long-term survival.

"But there have been numerous sightings of the birds across lower Eyre Peninsula since
the fire," Mr Hill said.

"Group of 15 to 25 birds have been seen and this is very heartening news."
