Fed: Costello says sorry over German woman's detention

CANBERRA, Feb 13 AAP - Treasurer Peter Costello today said he, and the federal government,
were sorry mentally ill Cornelia Rau was wrongly detained as a suspected illegal immigrant.

But Opposition Leader Kim Beazley demanded the apology come from Prime Minister John
Howard because the federal government was the starting point for blame in Ms Rau's case.

"I am sorry that it happened. I think the government is sorry that it happened," Mr
Costello said.

"The system failed Cornelia Rau and it's regrettable.

"I'm sure all those that are responsible will say to themselves it ...
