Thursday, February 17, 2005 -- They say you shouldn't confuse the artist with the art - meaning you shouldn't expect the personal life of a great poet, for instance, to be as pure, humane and inspiring as his poems. If you do, you're likely to be deeply disappointed. Great artists are necessarily self-absorbed and single-minded in the extreme, and those traits are liable to crowd out the simple sensitivity and considerateness you need not to be a great man, but just to be a good guy.

Arthur Miller, who died a week ago, was one of the three or four heroes ...
