Middle-aged, balding, and fastidious in his appearance, Paul Rusesabagina
looks more like he'd be an accountant for a movie than its hero.
Yet his extraordinary story of leadership amidst genocidal horror became
the basis of one of the year's most riveting films, "Hotel Rwanda," which
opened at local theaters on January 5.
"My secret was not to think about it," he told this writer. "I didn't have
the time to think about what was going on. I was just acting to help avoid
a catastrophe. I had to act as quickly as possible as to avoid a
catastrophe. Those days were too long. Every minute represented a danger,
day and night."
