(University Daily) (U-WIRE) LUBBOCK, Texas -- Requiring students to have health insurance before stepping into a classroom is a growing trend at many public colleges and universities across the country.

The 10 schools in the University of California system require all students to have health insurance before enrolling in classes, according to the University of California Web site, www.ucopo.edu.

Texas Tech does not require most students to have health insurance, but the Health Sciences Center does, according to www.ttuhsc.edu.

Evelyn McPherson, director of Student Health Services at Tech, said health insurance should be important to students.
