New Zealand failed to capitalize on a sound opening partnership Tuesday and was held to 233, batting first in the fourth limited-overs international against Australia at the Basin Reserve.
Stephen Fleming and Nathan Astle shared New Zealand's top score of 37 and put on 84 for the first wicket as Australia decided for the first time in the series to bowl on winning the toss.
Australia's captain, Ricky Ponting, stood down to rest a thigh injury and, in his absence, wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist tossed and chose to give his four-pronged pace attack first use of a receptive pitch.
