Tokyo's main stock index closed at a 10-month high Monday on the strength of a Wall Street rally and recent economic data showing Japan's economy was picking up. The U.S. dollar was down against the Japanese yen and the euro.
The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues rose 52.31 points, or 0.44 percent, to close at 11,925.36 points _ its highest closing since the April 28, 2004, finish of 12,004.29. The index has risen a total of 380.18 points, or 3.31 percent, over the last eight trading sessions, including Friday's gain of 15.59 points, or 0.14 percent.
