(U-WIRE) (U-WIRE) WASHINGTON -- As students nationwide prepare to board airplanes headed for Spring Break destinations, there is a new item on the list that they must leave behind: Cigarette lighters.
On Feb. 28, officials from the Transportation Security Administration, the government agency that oversees aviation security, announced that lighters would be banned on all aircraft and in all secure airport areas.
"By creating a policy to add lighters to the prohibited items, we are closing a potential vulnerability in air travel security," Rear Adm. David Stone, the TSA's assistant secretary of Homeland Security, said in a press release.
