Beginnings of the Universe

One of the dominating astronomical discoveries of the 20th century was the realization that the galaxies of the universe all seem to be moving away from us. It turned out that they are moving away not just from us but from one another--that is, the universe seems to be expanding. Scientists conclude that the universe must once, very long ago, have been extremely compact and dense. The explosion of matter that gave birth to the universe is called the Big Bang .
