OVERWEIGHT or obese individuals who have all but given up on losing weight
using drastic measures would be happy to know that even moderate weight
loss (as little as 5 percent to 10 percent of one's body weight) can have
long-lasting health effects and has received increasing attention as a
weight-loss strategy, according to the January 2005 issue of the Mayo
Clinic Health Letter.

A gradual and moderate weight loss is more likely to be maintained over a
long period of time as compared to many weight loss programs in which the
large majority of individuals regain most of the weight initially lost and,
possibly, even add more.
