The Sri Lankan navy has arrested four Indians and a Sri Lankan trying to smuggle a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of heroin into the country, officials said Thursday.

The men were traveling in a boat from southern India when they were captured near Mannar, 220 kilometers north of the capital Colombo, late Wednesday, said navy spokesman Jayantha Perera.

Perera said the heroin had a street value of US$25,000 (euro19,315).

The five men _ who were to face a magistrate later Thursday _ could face the death penalty or life imprisonment if found guilty. Sri Lanka has not carried out an execution in 29 years.
