McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa proved himself as a worthy replacement for his injured teammate after finishing ninth in the first qualifying session Saturday for the weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, who replaced injured Juan Pablo Montoya, clocked 1 minute, 30.725 seconds.

Montoya's best in the first two races in qualifying was also ninth.

The other Spaniard racing, Fernando Alonso of Renault, led the first qualifying session with a time of 1:29.848.

"The track was very slippery as a lot of dust had blown onto the circuit during the break," De la Rosa said.
