Thirteen year-old Mai Youa Vang thought she had a chance, but didn't expect
to be the winner of United Way's Winter Warm-Up children's drawing contest.
Her picture, titled "Warmhearted Minnesota," was the winning entry and
inspired this season's United Way ice sculpture at the Saint. Paul Winter
Carnival. The ice sculpture was the winner of the Winter Carnivals'
people's choice award.
An eighth grader from St. Paul, Vang modeled her drawing after the state of
Minnesota. The sculpture showed a slide that ran from the top of Minnesota
to a clothing drive bin on the ground. Several children were sculpted
