Union bosses recall his loyalty. Parishioners cite his courage. Almost everyone in this blue-collar city thinks Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes is the best choice to be the next pope.

In the streets, there's little to show how deep an impression Hummes made during his 21 years as bishop here, from 1975 to 1996. But the people of this city of 650,000 haven't forgotten him.

"He's extremely intelligent, courageous, impartial and humble," said Antonio Figueiro, 60, owner of the A Praca restaurant in front of the Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church. "I can't think of anyone more deserving to be the next pope."
