Union bosses recall his loyalty. Parishioners cite his courage. Almost everyone in this blue-collar city says Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes is the best choice to be the next pope.
In the streets, there's little to show how deep an impression Hummes made during his 21 years as bishop, from 1975 to 1996. But people here haven't forgotten him.
"He's extremely intelligent, courageous, impartial and humble," said Antonio Figueiro, owner of the A Praca restaurant in front of the Nossa Senhora do Carmo Church. "I can't think of anyone more deserving to be the next pope."
