Captain Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers struck polished centuries to pilot South Africa into a dominant position against West Indies on day two Friday of the third test at Kensington Oval.

The pair's opening stand of 191 steered South Africa to close comfortably placed at 253 for one, trailing the home team's first innings of 296 by only 43 runs.

Left-hander Smith's 104, his 10th test century, was decorated with 13 fours and one six. He faced 203 balls in 278 minutes.
