In a letter to the campus community on the occasion of Martin Luther King
Jr.'s birthday, Yale president Richard C. Levin detailed the progress Yale
has made in increasing the number of blacks and other minority students on
campus. But Levin conceded that the university has had less success in
racially diversifying its faculty ranks.

The latest JBHE data shows that blacks make up 2.8 percent of the total
faculty at Yale. Among the nation's 25 highest-ranked universities,
according to JBHE data, Yale ranked 17th in its percentage of black
faculty.
