Of all the bright flags and billboards dotting Moscow for celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Nazi defeat in World War II, one poster stands out: It shows Josef Stalin against the backdrop of a Red Army soldier raising the Soviet hammer-and-sickle flag atop the Reichstag in Berlin.

Stalin has always cut a contradictory figure in Russia, where he is seen as both a powerful leader who made the country strong and led it to victory over the Nazis _ and as a tyrant responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of his own people.
