Births exceeded deaths in 2004 for the first time in 60 years in Vienna, a city long regarded as a haven for the elderly, officials said Monday.

Provisional statistics for last year show that 632 more births than deaths were recorded in the capital of 1.8 million, with many of the babies born to mothers older than 30 in a trend that has steadily increased in recent years, the city's statistics office said.
