An adviser to the European Union's highest court on Tuesday said the name of feta cheese is a traditional Greek name and deserves protection throughout the EU, siding with Greece against Germany and Denmark.

The advice of the advocate general of the European Court of Justice will now be assessed by the full court which will have a final ruling on the case in several months. The court follows the advice in about 80 percent of the cases.

The nations concerned have been fighting over the name of the white crumbly cheese for a decade.
