North Koreans who flee to China in search of a better life suffer constant fear of arrest and deportation and have no good options to satisfy basic needs, says a report released Thursday.

Refugees International, a Washington-based advocacy group, urged China to grant North Koreans refugee status, which would bring them under the international law protection from being sent home involuntarily.

The report, citing official U.S. statistics, said the number of North Koreans living illegally in China is 30,000 to 50,000.
