A German extreme runner completed a 4,568 kilometer (2,838 mile) run from the west coast to the east coast of Australia on Sunday, in just over 43 days.

Waving German and Australian flags, 53-year-old Achim Heukemes crossed the finish line of his epic jog in front of a hotel on Sydney Harbor's shores with the city's famous Opera House in the background.

Heukemes endured extreme temperatures and other perils on the coast-to-coast run, often setting off at 2 a.m. to beat the heat as he crossed the searing Outback.
