Mukremin Kilinc, an Islamic activist, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison in 1997 for what Turkish courts called disseminating terrorist propaganda.
Convinced the judges had been biased against him, he turned to the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human rights, asking that it order Turkey to grant him a new trial.
The court ruled in his favor _ but it took six years. And by then, Kilinc had served out his sentence.
