Two Italian-led consortiums have bid to build one of the world's longest single span suspension bridge linking the Italian mainland with Sicily _ a euro4.4 billion (US$5.5 billion) project that has already been clouded by Mafia arrests and environmental concerns.
The company responsible for the project, Stretto di Messina SpA, said it had received two bids by Wednesday's deadline, which was pushed back from April 20 after many foreign companies that took part in the prequalification process dropped out of the bidding.
