The United States is lifting a ban on the sale of non-lethal military equipment to Indonesia, the latest step in the restoration of normal military ties between the two countries.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher disclosed the policy change on Thursday, a day after President George W. Bush met with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the White House.

Boucher said the decision enables the Indonesian military to make purchases from Defense Department stocks.
