Tessin. Monte Tamaro. The chapel Santa Maria Degli Angeli was consecrated in September 1996 by the Bishop of Lugano. Built by the Swiss architect Mario BOTTA on the personal initiative of a local selfmade man, Egidio CATTANEO, the chapel represents a major innovation in the design of religious buildings. Built in porphyry, it is situated at an altitude of 1500 meters on the edge of a steep slope, a position which allows an extraordinary panoramic view. Enzo CUCCHI'S decoration of the chapel occupies the two main spaces : the ceiling of the walkway, where a tall cypress is depicted, and the centre of the chapel.
